Lockeford Charitable and Temperance organizations collections, 1860-1892, bulk 1860-1865.

Box 1 contains minute books and account books of Division no. 29, Sons of Temperance, Lockeford, Calif. (1860-1865). Box 2 contains printed rituals, by-laws, tracts, reports and songbooks of the Dashaways, the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Independent Order of Good Templars, and the Sons of Temperance (1860-1892). It also contains correspondence of the Sons of Temperance, Division 29 (1861-1865) and minute books of the Lockeford Band of Hope (1868-1870) and the U.S. Sanitary Commission Soldier's Aid Society of Lockeford (1864-1865).

First temperance society in Lockeford, Calif., the Dashaways established by Dr. Dean Jewett Locke, town founder (c1858) in response to local alcohol-related murders. This group superseded by Live Oak Division no. 29, Sons of Temperance (1860-1865). This order gave way to Independent Order of Good Templars (1865-c1900) and Women's Christian Temperance Union (1889-c1915). All of these societies are both fraternal and charitable.
